How to Love God with Your Personality

There are four main ways God has made us to love him: “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength” (Mark 12:30 NLT). Every person can love God in all of these ways. But the reality is that each person focuses on one more than the others. You tend to be a heart person, a soul person, a mind person, or a strength person. That is your God-given personality—and God wants you to love him with it. As Romans 12:9 says, “Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it” (MSG).

Here’s what the Bible says about each personality type—its purpose, its weaknesses, and the warning connected to each one. Consider which personality trait best reflects you, and ask God to show you how to love him more fully with the personality he’s given you.

TALKERS love God with their HEARTS.

“I have not kept the good news . . . hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone . . . of your unfailing love and faithfulness.” Psalm 40:10 (NLT)

Purpose: Communication

“The words of the wise bring healing.” Proverbs 12:18 (NLT)

Weaknesses: Insecurity & Saying the wrong thing

“The more you talk, the more likely you are to sin.” Proverbs 10:19 (GNT)

Warning: You have to act, not just speak

“Sometimes mere words are not enough—discipline is needed.” Proverbs 29:19 (TLB)

FEELERS love God with their SOULS.

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” Psalm 42:1 (NIV)

Purpose: Compassion

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)

Weaknesses: Being manipulated by your moods

“Since your real home is in heaven…keep away from the evil pleasures of this world; they are not for you, for they fight against your very souls.” 1 Peter 2:11 (TLB)

Warning: Let God lead you

“Let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature.” Galatians 5:16 (GNT)

THINKERS love God with their MINDS.

“How I love your law! I think about it all day long.” Psalm 119:97 (GNT)

Purpose: Consideration

“We should think about the way we are living, and turn back to the LORD.” Lamentations 3:40 (CEV)

Weaknesses: Pride & Indecision

“Knowledge makes people arrogant, but love builds them up.” 1 Corinthians 8:1 (GW)

Warning: Practice humility & Do what you know

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what is says.” James 1:22 (NIV)

DOERS love God with their STRENGTH.

“Oh, GOD, here I am, your servant, your faithful servant: set me free for your service!” Psalm 116:16 (MSG)

Purpose: Contribution

“Offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing. That’s the most sensible way to serve God.” Romans 12:1 (CEV)

Weaknesses: Overwork

“It is senseless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, fearing you will starve to death; for God wants his loved ones to get their proper rest.” Psalm 127:2 (TLB)

Warning: Slow down and Do less

“Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.” Proverbs 23:4 (WEB)

The Bible says that when you become a believer, God changes you from the inside out: “When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 TLB). He forgives your past, gives you a reason for living, and promises you a home in heaven. But what doesn’t change is your personality—because God is the one who gave you your personality. In fact, he strengthens your personality so you can worship, love, and serve him with it.

Which personality has God given you? Are you a talker, feeler, thinker, or doer? Commit today to using all of your personality to worship, love, and serve God. And you’ll see the promise of Philippians 4:13 come true in your life: “I can do everything God asks me to with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power” (TLB).
